Early Life and Education

Sylvia Coleman grew up in Boston. She later moved to Philadelphia to attend Temple University from 1995 to 1998. There, she studied journalism and earned her bachelor's degree.

Journalism Career

During her career, Sylvia Coleman worked as a coordinator for the Learning Key. This was a weekly educational newspaper section for The Philadelphia Tribune in Philadelphia and New Jersey. Under her leadership, the Learning Key won the National Newspaper Association Award for Best Youth Section in 2000.

Later, she became an assistant editor and columnist at Advance Newsmagazines. She started a column called “Kaleidoscope,” which focused on diversity and fairness in the workplace. This column won first place in the 2003 Merion Publications’ Writer's Excellence Awards.

Throughout her journalism career, Sylvia Coleman interviewed many well-known people. These included singer Jill Scott, actress Jada Pinkett-Smith, and former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell.

Author

In 2008, Sylvia Coleman published her book, Creating a New Normal. The book shares her personal journey of recovery from homelessness and severe depression.
