Särna (which is called Sjär’n in the local Elfdalian language) is a small town in Sweden. It is located in Älvdalen Municipality, which is part of Dalarna County. In 2010, about 719 people lived in Särna. It's a quiet place known for its beautiful natural surroundings.

Särna's Past: A Look at Its History
How Särna Became Part of Sweden
Long ago, the areas of Särna and Idre were actually part of Norway. But in 1644, some Swedish farmers from Älvdalen took control of these areas. After this, a peace agreement called the Treaty of Brömsebro was signed in 1645. This treaty wasn't very clear about who Särna and Idre belonged to.
It wasn't until 1751 that the exact border was finally decided. At that time, Norway agreed that the border would be west of Idre and Särna. This meant that Särna officially became part of Sweden.
Särna During World War II
During World War II, from 1940 to 1945, Germany took over Norway. Many people in Norway wanted to escape to safety in Sweden. Särna was seen as the only truly safe escape route along the border. This was because the local police in Särna were known to be reliable and against the German occupation. They helped people find safety.
Joining Municipalities: Särna's Local Government Changes
In 1971, three different local areas, called municipalities, decided to join together. These were Särna, Idre (which had actually separated from Särna in 1916), and Älvdalen. They all combined to form the single, larger municipality we know today as Älvdalen Municipality.
Särna's Weather: Understanding the Climate
Särna has a type of weather called a subarctic climate. This means it has mild summers and very cold winters. The extremely cold temperatures in winter happen because Särna is quite high up and far away from the sea. Being far from the sea also means that the temperature can change a lot between day and night. It can even get frosty in any month of the year!
