What is Freerunning?

Sébastien Foucan says that the name "freerunning" came from Guillaume Pelletier. They worked together during the filming of Jump London. The word "freerunning" was created to help explain Parkour to people who speak English.

Over time, freerunning became Foucan's own way of moving. It focuses on being creative and expressing yourself. This is different from Parkour, which focuses on moving quickly and efficiently.

Freerunning Explained by Foucan

Foucan explains what freerunning means to him:

Freerunning, for me, is my Parkour evolution. I can't say any more that I do Parkour, because if I want to be free to do flips, or let's say I'm learning breakdancing, and I would like to incorporate it into my Parkour expression...Not to say I am doing capoeira, breakdancing, Parkour and anything else. Freerunning is the way I choose to name my own expression. Now people recognize Parkour with flips (acrobatics) as freerunning. But only the action of doing Parkour and flips is not freerunning. It's the action of adding more stuff into your expression. That's the Freerunning attitude.

Core Values of Freerunning

Foucan has described the main ideas behind freerunning:

Follow your way; Always practise; Respect others in their practise; Be an inspiration for others; Be positive and look for positive environments; Respect your environment; Feel free to try other disciplines; Don't take it too seriously; The journey is more important than the goal; There is no good or bad, right or wrong but what is important is what you learn from experiences through practise; Freerunning is not an elite discipline, but for the people who love and continue to move; Channel your energy in a good way, a way to be better.

He sees freerunning as a way to grow as a person. It is about finding your own path. Foucan felt that Parkour did not allow enough creativity. This led him to create freerunning, which is a similar art of movement.

Freerunning vs. Parkour

Foucan said he had to define freerunning as separate from parkour. This was because some people felt his style was not true parkour. For example, David Belle, a founder of Parkour, and other Parkour fans have criticized freerunning.

They see freerunning as a show that mixes parkour moves with acrobatics. They believe it is made to look more exciting for media and marketing. They say that Parkour focuses on humility and overcoming obstacles. Freerunning, they feel, focuses on showing off. So, even though they are related, their philosophies are different.

Foucan describes freerunning as a way to develop yourself through physical activity, play, and creativity. He sees it as a symbol of moving beyond "fixed paths and social systems."
