Early Life and Acting Career
Brown was born in Eden, North Carolina, and grew up in the nearby town of Stoneville. She went to college to study fashion design but left at age 19 to follow her dream of becoming an actress. She moved to California but faced some challenges, so she moved back to North Carolina for five years.
In 2002, Brown co-hosted a local TV show where she interviewed celebrities. In 2004, she and her husband moved back to Los Angeles. She tried stand-up comedy and worked at a Macy's department store while trying to get acting jobs. During this time, she also traveled back and forth to North Carolina to care for her mother, who was sick.
After her mother passed away in 2007, Brown acted in some small movies. Later, she developed health issues that caused long-term pain and tiredness, which made it hard for her to work for a year. Her daughter suggested she try a vegan diet to help her feel better, and it worked.
Becoming a Social Media Star
In 2017, Brown's life changed after she posted a video online. She was working as an Uber driver to support her family. One day, she recorded a review of a vegan BLT sandwich from Whole Foods Market. The video went viral!
The company was so impressed that they hired her as a brand ambassador. In 2020, she created a TikTok account and started sharing her vegan recipes, cooking tips, and encouraging words. Within five weeks, she had over 2 million followers.
Success in TV and Books
Her online fame opened up many new opportunities. In 2020, she began hosting a show called All Love on Ellen DeGeneres's digital network. The next year, she launched her own children's show on YouTube called Tab Time.
In 2021, Brown also started a hair care line called "Donna's Recipe." She published her first book, Feeding the Soul, which became a #1 New York Times bestseller. In 2022, she released her first cookbook, Cooking from the Spirit, which was also very successful.
Also in 2022, Brown began hosting It's CompliPlated on the Food Network, the channel's first-ever vegan cooking competition show. Her show Tab Time was nominated for two Children's and Family Emmy Awards, and in 2023, she won the award for Outstanding Host.
Partnership with Target
In 2022, Brown partnered with Target to create her own lines of clothing, home goods, and vegan food products.
In 2025, Target announced it was changing some of its programs that supported businesses owned by people from diverse backgrounds. Some people were upset and called for a boycott of the store. Brown asked her followers not to boycott, explaining that it could hurt her business and other minority-owned businesses that sell their products at Target.
Personal Life
Brown is married to Chance Brown, a former police officer. They host a show together on IGTV called Fridays with Tab & Chance. They have two children, Choyce and Queston. Brown is also a stepmother to Tyleah, her husband's daughter from a previous relationship. The family lives in Los Angeles, California.
