How Taco Rice Was Created
Taco rice was invented in 1984 by a person named Matsuzo Gibo. He introduced this new dish at his two cafes, Parlor Senri and King Tacos. These cafes were located very close to the main gate of Camp Hansen in Kin, Okinawa.
Before taco rice, there was Charlie's Tacos. This place started in 1956 and was known for serving tacos with shells made from rice flour. It was the first "taco place" on Okinawa.
Why Taco Rice is Popular
Taco rice is a favorite meal for many people. It's especially popular with U.S. military members who are stationed in Okinawa. They often enjoy it for lunch or as a late-night snack.
This dish has become well-known even outside of Okinawa. For a while in the 1990s, KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) offered taco rice on their menu across Japan. Yoshinoya, a big restaurant chain famous for its beef bowls (gyūdon), also serves taco rice in its Okinawa locations. Even Taco Bell in the Shibuya area of Tokyo has taco rice on its menu.
Different Ways to Enjoy Taco Rice
While taco rice usually has a Tex-Mex flavor, sometimes people change it up. They might use Japanese ingredients like soy sauce, mirin (a sweet cooking wine), and sake (rice wine) instead. This gives the dish a different, more Japanese taste.
Occasionally, you might find taco rice served in a tortilla roll. This makes it easy to eat on the go, like a burrito!
