Taha Yasin Ramadan al-Jizrawi (Arabic: طه ياسين رمضان الجزراوي; born February 20, 1938 – died March 20, 2007) was an Iraqi politician. He served as one of the three vice presidents of Iraq from March 1991 until April 2003. This was when the government of Saddam Hussein ended.
Political Career
Idea to Avoid Conflict

In October 2002, Taha Yasin Ramadan suggested a unique way to avoid war. He proposed that U.S. President George W. Bush and Iraqi President Saddam Hussein could settle their disagreements with a duel. He believed this would prevent damage to Iraq's buildings and reduce suffering for both the Iraqi and American people.
Ramadan's idea included a group of US officials facing a group of Iraqi officials. They would be of similar rank, like president versus president. He suggested the duel happen in a neutral country. Both sides would use the same weapons. The UN Secretary General Kofi Annan would be the supervisor. The White House, speaking for President Bush, did not accept this offer.
After 2003
After Saddam Hussein's government fell, Taha Yasin Ramadan was on a list of most-wanted Iraqis by the U.S. He was even shown as the "Ten of Diamonds" in a special deck of playing cards. He was captured on August 19, 2003, in Mosul. Fighters from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) caught him and gave him to US forces.
He was one of the people on trial in a special court called the Iraq Special Tribunal. This trial was known as the Al-Dujail trial. On November 5, 2006, he was sentenced to life in prison. Later, on December 26, 2006, an appeals court said the sentence was too light. They asked for a death sentence instead. On February 12, 2007, he was sentenced to death by hanging. His sentence was carried out on March 20, 2007. This was four years after the US entered Iraq.
Personal Life
Taha Yasin Ramadan was born into a farming family in Mosul. Some sources say he was of Kurdish background. However, his family has stated that he was Arab.
