About Tahoe Keys
Tahoe Keys is a large community. It covers about 740 acres. This area has many waterways inside it. It is like a small town built around canals and lagoons. These waterways stretch for about eleven miles. They are located at the southern tip of Lake Tahoe.
Most of the 1,500+ homes here have a private boat dock. This means people can park their boats right outside their houses. The community also has the Tahoe Keys Marina. This marina offers ramps for launching boats.
Environmental Concerns
Tahoe Keys was built in the 1960s. Its construction caused some environmental problems. Half of the Upper Truckee Marsh was destroyed. This marsh was very important. It helped filter river water before it entered Lake Tahoe. Many people say this was the most damaging project to the lake's shore.
Non-Native Species
The Tahoe Keys area has a big problem. It has the most non-native plants and fish in Lake Tahoe. Non-native means they are not originally from this area. These plants and fish can harm the local ecosystem. They can take over and push out native species.
This problem is very serious. Normal ways to control these species have not worked. Scientists and local groups are working to find new solutions. They want to protect Lake Tahoe's natural environment.
