The Taifa of Carmona (Arabic: طائفة قرمونة) was a small kingdom in a time called the Middle Ages. It was ruled by a group of people called the Berbers. This kingdom existed in two separate times. First, from 1013 to 1066, it was a kingdom on its own. Then, a bigger kingdom called the Taifa of Seville took it over. Later, around 1143, it became a kingdom again for a short time until 1150. Finally, a powerful empire called the Almohad Caliphate conquered it. The Taifa of Carmona was started and ruled by the Birzalid family, who were part of the Zenata Berber group.
What is a Taifa Kingdom?
After the big Caliphate of Córdoba in Spain broke apart in the early 11th century, many smaller, independent Muslim kingdoms appeared. These small kingdoms were called taifas. The Taifa of Carmona was one of these kingdoms. Each taifa had its own ruler and controlled a specific area.
The People of Carmona
The people who founded and ruled the Taifa of Carmona were from a Berber tribe called the Banu Birzal. The Berbers are an ethnic group native to North Africa. The Banu Birzal tribe came from a region called Zab in the central part of North Africa, which is now part of Algeria. They settled in the area of Carmona and established their rule there.
A Kingdom's Timeline
The Taifa of Carmona had an interesting history with different periods of being independent and being ruled by others:
- First Independent Period (1013–1066): The kingdom was first established in 1013. It was ruled by the Birzalid family.
- Conquered by Seville (1066–1091): In 1066, the larger Taifa of Seville took control of Carmona.
- Under Almoravid Rule (1091–c. 1143): Later, a powerful group from North Africa called the Almoravid dynasty took over many of the taifa kingdoms, including Carmona.
- Second Independent Period (c. 1143–1150): After the Almoravids' power weakened, Carmona became independent again for a short time.
- Conquered by Almohads (1150): Finally, in 1150, the Almohad Caliphate, another strong empire from North Africa, conquered Carmona and ended its time as a separate kingdom.
