The Taifa of Guadix and Baza was a small kingdom in what is now southern Spain. It existed during the Middle Ages, from 1145 to 1151. This kingdom was one of many "taifas" that appeared after a larger Muslim empire in Spain broke apart.

What Was a Taifa?
A taifa (say: TIE-fah) was a small, independent Muslim kingdom. These kingdoms formed in Al-Andalus (the Muslim-ruled parts of the Iberian Peninsula) during the Middle Ages. They appeared when the powerful Caliphate of Córdoba empire broke into many smaller states.
Each taifa had its own ruler, often called an emir. These rulers competed with each other for power and land. The Taifa of Guadix and Baza was one of these many small kingdoms.
History of the Guadix and Baza Kingdom
The Taifa of Guadix and Baza began in 1145. This happened during a time when many new taifas were forming. These new kingdoms appeared after the Almoravid dynasty lost control of the region.
The kingdom was quite small and did not last very long. It existed for only six years. In 1151, a stronger neighboring kingdom, the Taifa of Murcia, conquered it. This meant the Taifa of Guadix and Baza became part of Murcia's lands.
Who Ruled the Kingdom?
The only known ruler of the Taifa of Guadix and Baza was Ahmed ibn Muhammed ibn Malyan al-Muta'yyad. He was part of a family known as the Malyanid dynasty. He ruled the kingdom from its start in 1145 until it was conquered in 1151.
The capital city of this small kingdom was Guadix. This city is located in the modern-day province of Granada, Spain.
