The Taifa of Mértola (which means "Party Kingdom of Mértola" in Arabic) was a small, independent Muslim kingdom in what is now southeastern Portugal. It was one of many "taifas" that appeared after the big Caliphate of Córdoba broke apart.
This kingdom existed during three different times. It was first independent from 1033 to 1044. Then, it was independent again from 1144 to 1145, and finally from 1146 to 1151. For a long time, from 1044 to 1091, a stronger kingdom called the Taifa of Seville took control of Mértola. Its short history as an independent state ended in 1151 when a powerful group called the Almohad Caliphate conquered it.
Leaders of Mértola
This section lists the main leaders, called Emirs, who ruled the Taifa of Mértola during its different periods.
Abbadid Family
- Abbad II al-Mu'tadid: He ruled from 1033 to 1044.
- After 1044, Mértola became part of the Taifa of Seville until 1091. The Abbadid family from Seville ruled it during this time.
Almoravid Rule
- From 1091 to 1144, the Almoravid dynasty took control of Mértola. They were a powerful group from North Africa.
Qasid Family
- Abu-l-Qasim Ahmad ibn al-Husayn ibn Qasi: He was a very important leader. He ruled from 1144 to 1145.
- In 1145, Mértola was taken over by the Taifa of Badajoz for a short time, until 1146.
- Abu-l-Qasim Ahmad ibn al-Husayn ibn Qasi (restored): He became the ruler again from 1146 to 1151.
- The Taifa of Mértola was finally conquered by the Almohads in 1151. The Almohads then ruled the area until 1250.
