The Taifa of Santa Maria do Algarve (Arabic: شنتمرية الغرب) was a small Muslim kingdom. It was located in what is now southern Portugal. This kingdom existed during the Middle Ages, from 1018 to 1051.
A "taifa" was a small independent Muslim state. These states appeared in Spain and Portugal after the main Muslim caliphate broke apart. From 1051 until 1091, the Taifa of Santa Maria do Algarve was taken over by the Taifa of Seville. This happened under a ruler named Abbad II al-Mu'tadid.
The ruling family of this taifa was known as the Banu Harun. Even after their kingdom was conquered, their family members stayed important. They served as Qadis, which means judges, in the city. This continued until the area was taken back by Portugal in 1249. The last judge from this family was Aloandro Ben Bekar.
Rulers of the Taifa
The Taifa of Santa Maria do Algarve had two main rulers from the Harunid family. They were called Emirs.
Harunid Family Rulers
- Sa'id: He ruled from about 1018 to 1041 or 1042.
- Muhammad al-Mu'tasim: He ruled from 1041 or 1042 until 1051.
- After 1051, the kingdom became part of the Taifa of Seville. This lasted until 1091.
