Tainui, New Zealand

Tainui and Tahuna are two small neighbourhoods in the city of Dunedin, New Zealand. They are located south of Andersons Bay and Musselburgh. These areas are also very close to Dunedin's southern coastline, known as Ocean Beach. Sometimes, people think of Tainui and Tahuna as parts of Musselburgh or Andersons Bay.

Discovering Tainui and Tahuna

Tainui is in the northern part of these two neighbourhoods. It has many houses and is found in the southeastern corner of "The Flat." This "Flat" is a wide, flat area near the coast in southern Dunedin. Tainui is located between Victoria and Tahuna Roads to the south and Musselburgh Rise to the north.

Sports and Parks in Tainui

One important place in Tainui is Culling Park. This is a sports ground where the Dunedin Technical football (soccer) club plays its games. It's a great spot for local sports.

To the south of Tainui, you'll find Tahuna. This area stretches along Victoria and Tahuna Roads. Tahuna is mostly known for its large open spaces. These green areas are located between the roads and the ocean.

Famous Sports Venues in Tahuna

Tahuna is home to two well-known sports places: Chisholm Park Golf Course and Tahuna Park.

Chisholm Park Golf Course

Chisholm Park is a top-quality golf course. It's famous for one of New Zealand's best golf holes, called Lawyers Head. This hole curves around rocky cliffs, with the ocean waves crashing below. It's both beautiful to look at and very challenging to play! The golf course started with nine holes in 1937 and was made into an 18-hole course in 1941.

Tahuna Park: A Historic Sports Ground

Tahuna Park is a big sports venue. It hosts Dunedin's annual A&P show, which is a fun event with animals and farm displays. This park was also the first place in the city to hold international rugby union and rugby league matches.

The grounds opened in 1883. In 1905, the famous All Blacks rugby team played their only test match here, beating Australia 14–3. Tahuna Park also hosted a big rugby league game in 1924. The Great Britain team defeated the New Zealand team 31–18, with 16,000 fans watching!

Andersons Bay Cemetery and Lawyers Head

Another important open space near the coast is the Andersons Bay Cemetery. This is Dunedin's largest cemetery. It's located at the southeastern end of Tahuna. The cemetery is next to Chisholm Park Golf Links and sits on a hill that extends into the sea, known as Lawyers Head. The cemetery opened in 1867. A crematorium, a place where bodies are cremated, was built here in 1962.

Beyond the cemetery, Tahuna Road meets Tomahawk Road. Tomahawk Road goes down to the coast towards Ocean Grove. It also goes up north to meet Silverton Road in Andersons Bay. This part of Tahuna used to be called Ocean View. However, that name is not used much anymore to avoid confusion with another town called Ocean View, which is about 15 kilometres southwest.
