Taisia Kirillovna Afonina (born May 13, 1913 – died April 19, 1994) was a talented artist from Ukraine and Russia. She was known for her beautiful paintings and watercolors. Taisia lived and worked in a city called Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). She was part of a special group of artists known as the Leningrad School of Painting. This group was famous for its realistic style of art.

Taisia Afonina was born on May 13, 1913, in a city called Nikolaev. This city is now known as Mykolaiv in Ukraine. Her father worked at a large shipyard.

Her Art Education

In 1931, Taisia finished school in Taganrog. She then moved to Leningrad to study art. From 1932 to 1936, she took art classes at the Russian Academy of Arts.

In 1936, Taisia was accepted into the Repin Institute of Arts. This was a famous art school in Leningrad. She learned from well-known teachers like Mikhail Bernshtein and Victor Oreshnikov.

During World War II

When the Great Patriotic War (World War II) started in 1941, Taisia had to leave Leningrad. She moved with her young son and mother to safer places. In 1943, she helped rebuild the city of Luhansk in Ukraine. She also taught drawing and painting at the local art school there.

Taisia even went to the city of Krasnodon to help with art for a special event. This event honored the brave young members of the Young Guard. They were a secret group who fought against the Nazis.

Finishing Art School

In 1946, Taisia Afonina finished her studies at the Repin Institute of Arts. Her final project was a historical painting. It was called "Girls of Donbas" and honored the heroes of the anti-fascist movement.

After graduating, Taisia continued to work in Luhansk. She moved back to Leningrad in 1952. Many of her early paintings were bought by museums. These included museums in Luhansk, Leningrad, and even the Museum of Modern Art in Paris.

Her Art and Style

Taisia Afonina first showed her art in an exhibition in 1940. From the 1950s onwards, her work was often seen in art shows in Leningrad. She painted many different things. These included landscapes, still-lifes, portraits, and scenes of everyday life. She used both oil paints and watercolors. Taisia was especially known for her beautiful landscapes and still-life paintings.

In 1946, Taisia Afonina became a member of the Leningrad Union of Artists. This was a big achievement for artists.

What Her Paintings Showed

After art school, Taisia often painted about the war and rebuilding. Later, she focused more on portraits and peaceful landscapes. In the 1950s, she traveled to different places. She visited Ukraine and the Carpathian Mountains. There, she painted many studies of nature.
