The Taiwan Power Company (Chinese: 台灣電力公司; pinyin: Táiwān Diànlì GōngSī; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Tâi-oân Tiān-le̍k Kong-si), often called Taipower (Chinese: 台電; pinyin: Táidiàn; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Tâi-tiān), is a company owned by the government. It provides electricity to homes and businesses across Taiwan and its nearby islands.

How Taipower Started
Taipower officially began on May 1, 1946. However, its story started even earlier, in 1919. Back then, another company called Taiwan Electric Power Co. was formed when Taiwan was ruled by Japan.
Over the years, Taipower built a large power project at Sun Moon Lake. They also set up power lines that connected the northern and southern parts of Taiwan. This helped bring electricity to many more places.
In 1994, new rules allowed other companies, called "independent power producers," to make some of Taiwan's electricity. This was meant to stop Taipower from being the only company providing power.
In 2012, Taipower teamed up with the Taiwan Water Corporation. They created a "Water and Power Associated Service" to make it easier for people to pay for both water and electricity bills together. Later that year, a government committee reduced the money Taipower could spend buying power from other companies.
In 2015, the government decided to change Taipower. The plan was to split it into two separate parts over the next few years. One part would focus on making electricity, and the other would manage the power lines that deliver it. This change was made to help the company work better and encourage more competition in the electricity business. This split was further confirmed in 2016.
How Taipower Works
Taipower runs Taiwan's active nuclear power plants. It also operates power plants that use coal. However, there are plans to close these coal plants and use natural gas instead.
The company started receiving its first deliveries of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in 2023. This shows Taipower is moving away from coal to produce electricity.
Taipower's main office is in a 27-story building in Taipei. This building was finished in 1983. At that time, it was the tallest building in Taiwan and the first to be over 100 meters tall.
Money Matters
As of 2019, Taipower was the only government-owned company in Taiwan that was not making a profit. It reported a loss of about US$955 million in the first half of 2019. The company said this was because of rising fuel prices and new rules to reduce pollution, which made it more expensive to produce energy.

The Taiwan Power Company baseball team (Chinese: 台灣電力公司棒球隊), also known as the Taipower baseball team (台電棒球隊), is one of Taiwan's top amateur baseball teams. It is owned by a government-sponsored company.
The Taipower team and the Taiwan Cooperative Bank team were both started in 1948. They have a long history of being the strongest baseball teams in Taiwan. People even used to say, "TCB of the North, Taipower of the South."
Even though many of their best players later joined professional teams, the Taipower team is still considered one of the best amateur teams. They have also helped train many talented Taiwanese baseball players who are now important players on other teams.
The team started in 1945 when some Taipower employees who loved baseball formed the Kaohsiung Power Baseball Team. Over the years, the team grew and recruited many promising players. It became known as the Taipower Baseball Team because it had players from all over Taiwan, not just Kaohsiung.
The team has played in almost every amateur season and tournament, winning many of them. Since 2014, the team has been part of the semi-professional Popcorn League.
