The Taiwan Stock Exchange Corporation (TWSE) is a very important place for money and businesses in Taipei, Taiwan. It is located in the tall Taipei 101 building. The TWSE started in 1961 and began helping companies trade stocks on February 9, 1962. A government group called the Financial Supervisory Commission watches over it.
A stock exchange is like a big marketplace. Here, companies can sell small parts of themselves, called "stocks," to people who want to invest. When you buy a stock, you become a tiny owner of that company. This helps companies get money to grow, and it lets people invest their savings.
As of December 31, 2013, the Taiwan Stock Exchange had 809 companies listed. The total value of all these companies together was very large, over 24 trillion New Taiwan dollars.
The exchange has specific hours for trading. Before the main trading starts, information is shown from 7:40 AM to 8:40 AM. The main trading happens from 9:00 AM to 1:45 PM. After that, there's a special session from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM where prices are fixed. Trading happens every weekday, but not on Saturdays, Sundays, or special holidays.
Understanding Stock Market Indexes
The Taiwan Capitalization Weighted Stock Index (TAIEX) is like a report card for the entire stock market in Taiwan. It measures how well all the listed companies are doing together.
What is TAIEX?
TAIEX is the most important and most often talked about index in Taiwan. It helps people quickly see if the stock market is going up or down. If TAIEX is rising, it usually means companies are doing well. If it's falling, it means they might be facing challenges.
