Takashi Fukunishi (福西 崇史, Fukunishi Takashi, born September 1, 1976) is a Japanese former professional footballer. He played as a midfielder, a player who helps both defense and attack. He was also a key player for the Japan national team.

Club Career Highlights

Takashi Fukunishi was born in Niihama, Japan, on September 1, 1976. After finishing high school, he joined the football club Júbilo Iwata in 1995. He quickly became an important player for the team.

Fukunishi played as a defensive midfielder. He helped protect his team's goal. He was a central player during a very successful time for Júbilo Iwata. The club won the J1 League championship three times: in 1997, 1999, and 2002. They also won the J.League Cup in 1998 and the Emperor's Cup in 2003.

Júbilo Iwata also did well in Asian competitions. They won the 1998–99 Asian Club Championship, which is a big tournament for clubs in Asia. They also finished second in this championship in 1999–2000 and 2000–01. After many successful years with Júbilo Iwata, Fukunishi played for FC Tokyo in 2007 and Tokyo Verdy in 2008 before ending his career.

Playing for Japan

Takashi Fukunishi first joined the Japan national team in June 1999. His first game was against Peru in the 1999 Copa América tournament.

He was part of the Japanese squad for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, which was held in Japan and South Korea. He played a few minutes as a substitute in a match against Russia. After the 2002 World Cup, Fukunishi became a regular player for Japan starting in 2004.

He played in the 2004 AFC Asian Cup, where Japan won the championship. He played in all six matches and scored two goals, including Japan's first goal in the final game. Fukunishi also represented Japan in the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He played a total of 64 games for Japan and scored 7 goals before he retired from international football in 2006.
