Takayuki Fujikawa (藤川 孝幸, Fujikawa Takayuki, October 10, 1962 – November 15, 2018) was a Japanese football player. He was best known for his role as a goalkeeper. He played for the club Verdy Kawasaki for many years.

Who Was Takayuki Fujikawa?

Takayuki Fujikawa was born in Kawasaki, Japan. This was on October 10, 1962. He grew up to become a professional football player. His main job on the field was to be a goalkeeper.

His Time as a Player

Takayuki Fujikawa started his football journey early. He joined the youth team of Yomiuri in 1978. This club later became known as Verdy Kawasaki. He officially joined the main team in 1981.

He played many games as a goalkeeper, especially during the 1985–86 season. For a long time, he competed with another goalkeeper, Shinkichi Kikuchi, for the starting spot.

In 1992, the Japan Soccer League changed. A new league called J1 League was created. However, Takayuki's chances to play became less frequent. This was because Kikuchi was often chosen over him. He decided to retire from playing football at the end of the 1995 season. He played a total of 82 games in his career.

After Playing: Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Fujikawa began a new career. He started coaching at Verdy Kawasaki in 1996. He worked there as a goalkeeper coach until 2000.

From 2001, he coached goalkeepers at several other J.League clubs. These included Vissel Kobe (2001–2004), Vegalta Sendai (2005), Cerezo Osaka (2007), and Avispa Fukuoka (2008–2009).

He also coached at universities. He managed Konan University in 2006. Later, he coached at International Budo University in 2010. In May 2017, he became the chairman for Tokachi FC. This club is now known as Hokkaido Tokachi Sky Earth.

His Legacy

Takayuki Fujikawa passed away on November 15, 2018. He was 56 years old. He died from stomach cancer. He is remembered for his contributions to Japanese football. This includes his time as a player and as a coach.
