The name Talala also has a special meaning. It is a Cherokee word for the Red-Headed Woodpecker. People say the name sounds like the tapping of a woodpecker's beak. This bird was very common in the area. The town has made the woodpecker part of its history. You can see signs with the bird at the town's entrances. It is also on paper used at Town Hall and in the Museum.
Talala Museum
The Talala Museum is located where the town's first Post Office used to be. Outside the museum, you can see a statue of two eagles. A local artist named Sandra VanZandt created this statue.
In May 2012, three special plaques were put up near the statue. These plaques honor the brave people who served in World War II. Inside the museum, you can explore many items that tell the story of Talala's past.
