Exploring Talayuela's Location
Talayuela is in the northeast part of the Extremadura region. It sits in the valley of the Tiétar river, which is a branch of the big Tagus river. The town is part of a local area called Campo Arañuelo, right next to another area called La Vera. This land is mostly flat, about 287 meters (942 feet) above sea level.
Nature and Wildlife in Talayuela
Talayuela has a large and green pine forest. There are also many oak forests that have been turned into open fields for farming. The area has several important ponds. These ponds are like safe homes and food stops for local animals and birds that travel long distances.
Who Lives in Talayuela?
In 2007, about 9,582 people lived in Talayuela, including those on nearby farms. The number of people living here has grown because many immigrants have moved to the town looking for jobs. Today, people from 22 different countries live in Talayuela. About one-third of the town's population are immigrants.
Talayuela's Economy and Jobs
The main way people in Talayuela used to make money was by growing tobacco. However, this has changed in recent years because the European Union stopped giving money to support tobacco farming.
Other Important Crops
Now, other crops are becoming more important. These include asparagus, which provides many jobs because there are two big canning factories nearby. People also grow peppers, tomatoes, and corn. As tobacco farming decreases, farmers are trying new crops like saffron, cotton, and coffee. Cotton and coffee were actually grown in Talayuela before tobacco became popular.
How People Make a Living
Many families in Talayuela, including immigrants, depend on farming for their income. People often work with tobacco and asparagus harvests at different times of the year. This helps them stay employed for most of the year. Some immigrants also travel to other parts of Spain to work on grape and orange harvests. Growing tobacco was once so important that it helped many young people pay for their education. They would work in the summer and study in the winter.
A Look at Talayuela's Past
Talayuela was founded in the 1500s. It started as an expansion of the nearby town of Plasencia. The most important old building in Talayuela, the San Martín church, was also built in the same century.
