The Story of Tallevast
Early Beginnings
The land where Tallevast is today was once owned by two brothers, J. H. and J. L. Tallevast. They came from South Carolina and moved to Manatee County in 1900. The family settled near a place called Bowlees Creek. This area is now known as Whitfield Estates.
The Tallevast community first started as a camp for workers. These workers helped the Tallevast family with their business. This business made turpentine, which is a liquid made from pine trees.
Growing Over Time
A post office opened in Tallevast in 1919. This helped the community grow and connect with other places.
For many years, Tallevast was a neighborhood mainly for African American families. It did not always get the same support or funding as other areas. In the 1940s, telephone service finally came to the community.
In the early 1980s, a big step forward happened. The community received a grant of $1 million from the government. This money helped to bring sewer and water services to Tallevast. It also helped to pave the roads, which used to be dirt and grass.
More recently, new businesses have come to the area. An Amazon distribution center opened along Tallevast Road in October 2021. In the past few years, there has been more development and growth in the Tallevast area.
