The name "Tallula" is thought to be an old Native American word. Some say it means "dropping water." Others believe it means "trickling water" because of the many springs nearby.

Tallula officially became a village in 1871 or 1872. William Greene and a doctor named J. F. Wilson opened the first local bank in May 1877.
