Tallula is a small village located in Menard County, Illinois, United States. It was started in 1857 by a person named William G. Greene. In 2020, about 434 people lived there. Tallula is also part of the larger Springfield area.
The History of Tallula Village
Tallula was planned in late 1857 by several people. These included William G. Greene, J. G. Greene, Richard Yates, T. Baker, and W. G. Spears.
The name "Tallula" is thought to be an old Native American word. Some say it means "dropping water." Others believe it means "trickling water" because of the many springs nearby.
Tallula officially became a village in 1871 or 1872. William Greene and a doctor named J. F. Wilson opened the first local bank in May 1877.
Where is Tallula Located?
Tallula is in the southwestern part of Menard County. It is at the center of Tallula Precinct.
Illinois Route 123 runs through the village. This road leads northeast about 10 miles to Petersburg, which is the county seat. It also goes south about 4.5 miles to Illinois Route 125.
The village covers about 0.53 square miles (1.38 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area within the village limits. Water from Tallula flows north into Clary Creek. This creek eventually joins the Sangamon River, which is part of the Illinois River system.
