Later, during the time when Jorge Ubico was president (from 1931 to 1944), Mauricio Thomae became one of the most important landowners in the German Verapaz region. Other influential families included the Sarg, Sapper, and Diesseldorf families. President Ubico had been a governor in Cobán before becoming president. During that time, he became friends with several German families, including the Thomaes.
