Tampa is an abandoned town located in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. It is found between the towns of Kookynie and Leonora. An abandoned town means that most or all of its people have left, and it is no longer an active community.
The Story of Tampa
Tampa became a town because of a big discovery. People found gold in the area during the late 1890s. This made many people want to move there.
Gold Rush and Town Creation
By 1896, there were so many people looking for gold that they needed a proper town. The government agreed to survey, or measure out, land for building lots. This helped create a planned community. The townsite was officially made a town in 1897. This process is called "gazetting" a town.
How Tampa Got Its Name
It is believed that Tampa was named after Tampa in the United States. This was a common practice back then. For example, the nearby town of Niagara is also thought to be named after a place in America called Niagara.
