The Tampa Reservation is a special place in Florida. It is one of six Indian reservations that belong to the Seminole Tribe of Florida. A reservation is land set aside by the government for Native American tribes. This reservation is located in Hillsborough County, Florida.

How the Tampa Reservation Started

The Tampa Reservation was created in 1980. It started with nine acres of land. A woman named Ruby Tiger Osceola and 17 members of her family moved there. They came from Bradenton because then-Chief James E. Billie asked them to.

What Happens on the Reservation?

The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Tampa is located on this reservation. This large entertainment center helps create jobs and income for the tribe. You can also find the Hard Rock Cafe, the Green Room, and a food court there. These businesses are in Tampa, Florida.

Other Seminole Reservations

The Seminole Tribe of Florida has other reservations too. These are other lands where tribal members live and work:

  • Big Cypress Reservation: This is the largest Seminole territory. It covers about 82 square miles (212 square kilometers). It is located in Broward and Hendry Counties.
  • Brighton Reservation: This reservation is about 57 square miles (148 square kilometers). It is in Glades County.
  • Hollywood Reservation: This area used to be called the Dania Reservation. It is about 497 acres (2 square kilometers) in size. It is also in Broward County.
  • Immokalee Reservation: This reservation is located in Collier County.
  • Fort Pierce Reservation: This is a 50-acre (0.2 square kilometer) site. The United States Department of the Interior officially recognized it for the tribe in 1995.

Language and Culture

Most members of the Seminole Tribe speak two languages. They speak English and the Mikasuki language. The Mikasuki language is also spoken by the Miccosukee Tribe. However, fewer young people are speaking the traditional Muskogean languages today.
