Tan Son Nhat International Airport (Vietnamese: Sân bay quốc tế Tân Sơn Nhất) is a very important airport in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. It is the largest airport in all of Vietnam.
This airport is super busy! In 2006, about 8.5 million passengers used it. By 2007, that number grew to 11 million passengers. This means it handled more than half of all passengers in Vietnam's airports. It also managed two-thirds of all international flights for Vietnam.
The airport covers a huge area of about 850 ha (2,100 acres). It has two terminals, one for domestic flights and one for international flights. Together, these terminals can handle up to 17 million passengers every year. The new international terminal opened on August 14, 2007.
History of Tan Son Nhat Airport
This airport was first built by the French in the 1930s. It started as a smaller airfield.
During the Vietnam War, the United States made the airport much bigger. This was done to help with military flights and support the war effort.
After the Fall of Saigon in April 1975, the airport changed. It stopped being mainly a military base. Instead, it became a commercial airport for regular passenger flights.
