Tanggula railway station is a train station located in Tibet. It is found in Amdo County. Tibet is a special area within China. This station is famous for being the highest train station in the world. It sits at an elevation of 5,068 meters (about 16,627 feet) above sea level. To give you an idea, the next highest station outside China used to be Ticlio station in Peru, which is at 4,829 meters.

The station was closed in 2009. However, there are plans to open it again for special tourist trains. These trains would allow visitors to experience this unique high-altitude location.


The World's Highest Train Station

Tanggula railway station is very close to Tanggula Pass. This pass is the highest point on the Qingzang railway line. It reaches an amazing 5,072 meters above sea level.

The station first opened on July 1, 2006. It does not have any staff working there. The railway was built to connect different parts of China. It also helps with travel and trade in the region.

Station Features and Tourist Plans

The station has three railway tracks. Two of these tracks have platforms for trains. These platforms are very long, stretching for 1.25 kilometers (about 0.78 miles). The spot where the station was built was chosen carefully. It offers amazing views of the surrounding mountains and landscapes.

In 2008, a company called Tangula Railtours started a special tourist train service. These trains travel from Beijing all the way to Lhasa. They pass right through the Tanggula area. Three special luxury trains were built just for this service. They offer a unique way to see the high-altitude scenery.
