Tangowahine is a small community located in Northland, New Zealand. It sits near the northern part of the Kaipara Harbour. The Tangowahine Stream flows from the Tutamoe Range. It then joins the Wairoa River right at Tangowahine. State Highway 14, an important road, goes through this community. Tangowahine is about 12 kilometers southwest of Dargaville. It is also 15 kilometers northeast of Tangiteroria.

A Look Back at Tangowahine's Past

A bridge was built over the Tangowahine River between 1893 and 1895. This bridge helped complete a road connecting Dargaville to Tangiteroria.

Tangowahine was once a busy town known for its timber mills. These mills processed wood from trees like kahikatea and kauri. Robert Gibbon's mill, built around 1900, even had electric lights! Steamers, which are boats powered by steam, would load timber at the town's two wharves. The S.S. Matarere was a steamer that offered passenger services. Around 1910, about 402 people lived in Tangowahine.

The mill was rebuilt after a fire in 1916, but it closed in 1931. People called "gum-diggers" also worked in the area in the early 1900s. They dug up kauri gum, which was used for things like varnish.

From January 1931, Tangowahine was the end point for the railway line. In 1940, the railway line was extended further to Dargaville.
