Tania Maria's Musical Journey
Tania Maria was born in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil. She started playing the piano when she was just seven years old. By age 13, she was already leading her own band. Her father, who was a metal worker, was also a great guitarist and singer. He encouraged Tania to learn piano.
Her father wanted her to play in his weekend music sessions. This is where Tania first learned about samba, jazz, pop, and Brazilian chorinho music. Her band, made up of professional musicians, won first prize in a local music contest. After that, they played for dances, in clubs, and on the radio. Tania has always led her own groups and never played in anyone else's band. She also has a degree in law.
Becoming an International Star
Tania's first album, Apresentamos (meaning We Present), came out in Brazil in 1966. Her second album, Olha Quem Chega (Look Who's Here!), was released in 1971. In 1974, Tania moved to Paris, France. This move helped her become famous around the world.
During a concert in Australia, her amazing musical skills caught the eye of American guitarist Charlie Byrd. He suggested her to Carl Jefferson, who started Concord Records. Tania's 1983 album, Come With Me, was a big step in her international success. The song "Come With Me" became a popular dance song in the 1980s. Many artists have covered it since then.
In 1984, her album Love Explosion featured the song "Deep Cove View." This song was played a lot by Robbie Vincent on his radio shows. Her 1985 album, Made in New York, made her even more popular worldwide.
Performing Around the World
Tania Maria has performed at almost every major jazz festival globally. She has also appeared on many TV and radio shows. She has recorded more than 25 albums. In 1985, she was nominated for a Grammy Award for "Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Female."
She has played at famous venues like the Blue Note Jazz Club. She has also performed at festivals such as the Monterey Jazz Festival (in 1981, 1983, and 1989), Montreux Jazz Festival, and Newport Jazz Festival. Tania has played with many talented musicians, including Steve Gadd, Anthony Jackson, Sammy Figueroa, and Eddie Gómez.
