Tarpley is a small, unincorporated community in Bandera County, Texas, United States. This means it's not an official city or town. According to the Handbook of Texas, about 30 people lived here in 2000. Tarpley is also part of the larger San Antonio area.
Tarpley's Story
The story of Tarpley began in 1878. A post office called Hondo Cañon opened near Williams Creek. In 1899, the post office moved a bit south. It was then renamed Tarpley. This new name honored the postmaster's son.
By 1900, a store and a blacksmith shop were added next to the post office. A Baptist church opened its doors in 1902. The community grew slowly over the years. In 1925, about 25 people lived there. By 1984, the population reached 40. In both 1990 and 2000, Tarpley had a population of 30.
In more recent times, Tarpley has become famous for a restaurant. It's called Mac & Ernie's Roadside Eatery. Even though Tarpley is not an official town, it still has its own post office. The zip code for Tarpley is 78883.
Where is Tarpley?
Tarpley is located in the southern part of Bandera County. You can find it where two roads meet: Farm to Market Road 462 and Farm to Market Road 470. It sits right on Williams Creek. Tarpley is about 12 miles southwest of the town of Bandera.
