A Look at Tarrafal's History

The area of Tarrafal became its own municipality in 1917. Before that, it was part of a larger area called Santa Catarina. Later, in 1997, a part of Tarrafal was separated to form a new municipality called São Miguel.

During a time when Salazar was in charge, a special camp was built near Tarrafal. This camp was used to hold people who did not agree with the government at that time.
