Tasialuk (which means ᑕᓯᐊᓗᒃ in Inuktitut syllabics) is a large freshwater lake located on the northeastern coast of Baffin Island in Nunavut, Canada. It used to be called Ayr Lake. Even though it's a lake, some people call it a fjord, which is a long, narrow inlet of the sea between high cliffs. Tasialuk is completely surrounded by land.
This amazing lake is part of the Qikiqtaaluk Region in Canada's Arctic. Two Inuit communities are nearby: Pond Inlet is about 360 km (220 mi) to the northwest, and Clyde River is about 35 km (22 mi) to the east.
Exploring Tasialuk's Geography
Tasialuk is found to the east of two other fjords, Kangiqtualuk Uqquqti and Arviqtujuq Kangiqtua. The lake stretches out for about 60 km (37 mi), running roughly from the northeast to the southwest.
Water Flow and Connections
The Kuugaaluk River flows out of the northern end of Tasialuk. This river then travels another 40 km (25 mi) to the northeast before its waters reach Baffin Bay.
Stunning Landscapes
The area around Tasialuk is incredibly beautiful, with dramatic landscapes. You'll see massive mountains that rise almost 1,400 m (4,600 ft) high, standing like giant walls very close to the lake's shore. These tall peaks are especially noticeable in the middle part of the lake.
In the inner part of the lake, there's a special connection called the Ayr Pass. This pass links Tasialuk with the Arviqtujuq Kangiqtua fjord, which is located to the west.
