Tasiujarjuaq is a very large lake in Nunavut, Canada. It is located on Baffin Island, a big island in the Arctic. The name "Tasiujarjuaq" comes from the Inuit language. It means "big lake-like lake." This lake is special because it has a mix of fresh and salty water!
What Makes Tasiujarjuaq Special?
This lake is known as a meromictic lake. This means that its layers of water do not mix together. In Tasiujarjuaq, the top part of the lake is fresh water. The bottom part is salty water. This happens because of strong tides and special "reversing falls" in a nearby area called Pleasant Inlet.
Fresh water from the Soper River flows into Tasiujarjuaq. Then, the lake's water flows into Pleasant Inlet. From there, it reaches the huge Arctic Ocean.
History of the Area
A small town called Kimmirut is located right by Tasiujarjuaq. This town used to be called Lake Harbour. A long time ago, in 1911, a company called the Hudson's Bay Company set up a trading post here. It was their first trading post in southern Baffin Island.
The river and the lake were named by a Canadian biologist and explorer. His name was J. Dewey Soper. He traveled in this area in 1931.
