Muhammad Taufiq Kiemas (born December 31, 1942 – died June 8, 2013) was an important Indonesian politician. He served as the Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly of Indonesia from 2009 until he passed away in 2013. He was a member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P). Taufiq Kiemas was married to Megawati Sukarnoputri, who was the president of Indonesia from 2001 to 2004.

Early Life and Education

Family Background

Taufiq Kiemas was born to Tjik Agus Kiemas and Hamzathoen Roesyda. His father came from South Sumatra. His mother was from the Minangkabau group. This group lives in West Sumatra.

Taufiq was also the head of his mother's family in Tanah Datar Regency. He held a special family title called Datuk Basa Batuah.

Education and Student Life

Taufiq studied law at Sriwijaya University. While he was a student, he was very active in the Indonesian National Student Movement (GMNI). This was a group for students who were interested in politics and national issues.

Marriage to Megawati Sukarnoputri

In 1973, Taufiq Kiemas married Megawati Sukarnoputri. Megawati is the daughter of Sukarno, who was Indonesia's first president.

Together, Taufiq and Megawati had a daughter named Puan Maharani. Puan Maharani is also a politician. She is currently the Speaker of the People's Representative Council. Taufiq also helped raise Megawati's two sons from her earlier marriage.

Political Journey

Starting in Politics

Taufiq Kiemas began his political journey as a student. He joined the GMNI, which helped him get involved in national discussions. Later, he joined the Indonesian Democratic Party.

In 1992, he was chosen to be a member of the People's Representative Council. This is like a parliament where laws are made.

After the New Order Era

Taufiq's political career became more important after 1998. This was when the "New Order" government ended. In the 1999 election, his party, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), won many votes.

Because of this victory, his wife, Megawati, became the Vice President. Then, in 2001, she became the fifth President of Indonesia. She took over from Abdurrahman Wahid.

As a key figure in the PDI-P party, Taufiq became the Chairman of the Central Advisory Council. He was also re-elected to the People's Representative Council for the 2009–2014 term. Taufiq was known as a leader of the PDI-P's Muslim religious group. He often shared his thoughts on national topics. Sometimes, he even had different ideas from his wife about how to lead the party.

Health and Passing

Health Issues

Taufiq Kiemas had health problems, including issues with his heart and kidneys. He had a bypass surgery in Australia in 2000. This is an operation to help blood flow to the heart.

In 2005, he had another operation to put in a pacemaker. A pacemaker is a small device that helps the heart beat regularly. He also had surgery to replace its battery. Taufiq was in the hospital several times after these treatments.

His Passing

Taufiq Kiemas passed away on June 8, 2013, in Singapore General Hospital. He died from a heart attack.

The next day, his body was flown back to Jakarta on an Indonesian Air Force aircraft. He received a full state funeral. This is a special ceremony for important national figures. He was buried at the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery. The President of Indonesia at the time, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, led the ceremony. Many important people, including Taufiq's family and government officials, attended.

His Legacy

Books and Recognition

Taufiq Kiemas wrote several books. His most famous book was his life story, called "Gelora Kebangsaan Tak Kunjung Padam". This means "The National Spirit Remains Alive". The book shared stories from his life and his ideas about Indonesia. It was launched in December 2012 to celebrate his 70th birthday.

In 2021, an airport in Pesisir Barat Regency, Lampung, was renamed after him. It is now called Pekon Serai Airport.

Awards and Honors

  • August 11, 2011 – He received the Star of the Republic of Indonesia Adipradana. This is a very high honor in Indonesia.
  • March 10, 2013 – He was given an Honoris Causa Doctorate. This is an honorary degree given by Trisakti University for his contributions to nationality and the state.
