Taye Atske Selassie Amde (Amharic: ታዬ አጽቀሥላሴ) was born on January 13, 1956. He is an important Ethiopian diplomat and politician. Since October 2024, he has been the President of Ethiopia. Before becoming president, he worked in many different roles. He was an ambassador to Egypt and Ethiopia's main representative at the United Nations. He also served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Early Life and Learning
Taye Atske Selassie Amde grew up in a place called Debarq, in Gondar, Ethiopia. He went to Addis Ababa University. There, he earned a degree in Political Science and International Relations. Later, in 1989, he got a master's degree. This was in International Relations and Strategic Studies from Lancaster University.
His Career as a Diplomat
Taye Atske Selassie worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was a consultant in the European Department. He also led the Western Europe Department. For a time, he was the acting Director of Information.
From 2002 to 2010, he worked at the Ethiopian embassy in Washington D.C.. He was also a consul general in Los Angeles. A consul general helps citizens from their country who are living abroad.
Later, from 2017 to 2018, he was Ethiopia's ambassador to Egypt. In 2018, he became Ethiopia's Permanent representative to the United Nations. This means he was Ethiopia's main voice at the UN. He spoke out against a report about events in the Tigray war.
On January 26, 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Demeke Mekonnen, stepped down. Taye Atske Selassie was chosen to take his place on February 8, 2024. He also helped with talks between Ethiopia and Somalia. These talks were about Ethiopia leasing part of the coastline from Somaliland.
Becoming President


On October 7, 2024, Taye Atske Selassie was sworn in as the new President of Ethiopia. He took over from former President Sahle-Work Zewde. Taye Atske Selassie is a close supporter of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
