Tazewell is a town located in Tazewell County, Virginia, United States. In 2010, about 4,627 people lived there. It is part of the larger Bluefield area, which has over 100,000 residents. Tazewell is also the county seat of Tazewell County. This means it's where the main government offices for the county are located.

History of Tazewell

Tazewell used to be called Jeffersonville until 1892. It grew near the start of the Clinch River. What's cool is that Tazewell was once one of the smallest towns in the U.S. to have its own streetcar system!

The town and county grew quickly in the late 1800s. This was because of a big boom in coal and iron mining. People were discovering and using the rich resources from the Pocahontas Coalfields nearby.

Several important historical places in Tazewell are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Big Crab Orchard Site, Bull Thistle Cave Archeological Site, and the Tazewell Historic District. These sites help protect and remember the town's past.

The town covers about 4.0 square miles (10.5 square kilometers) of land. There is no significant water area within the town limits.

A famous part of Virginia State Highway 16 runs through Tazewell. It's known as the "Back of the Dragon". This 32-mile stretch of road is very twisty. It has hundreds of sharp turns, going up and down hills. It's a favorite spot for people who love riding motorcycles or driving sports cars!
