Tazo Tea Company is a company that makes and sells different kinds of tea and herbal tea. It was first started in Portland, Oregon. Today, it is part of Lipton Teas and Infusions and is based in Kent, Washington.
The Story of Tazo Tea
Tazo Tea was started in 1994 by a person named Steven Smith. At first, another company called North American Tea & Coffee helped make and deliver the tea.
In 1998, Tazo talked to Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz. They were looking for more people to invest in their company. Starbucks bought Tazo in 1999 for about $8.1 million.
Starbucks opened the first Tazo tea shop in November 2012. However, it closed just one year later. That shop was then changed into a Teavana store.
In November 2017, Starbucks sold Tazo to a company called Unilever for $384 million. Later, Unilever sold Tazo to Lipton Teas and Infusions.
Tazo's Unique Style and Look
Tazo uses a special way to market its products. This style is sometimes called "New Age". For example, every box of tea used to say it was "blessed by a certified tea shaman". One of their first slogans was "The Reincarnation of Tea."
Until 2013, the Tazo logo used a specific font called Exocet. They made small changes to it. For instance, in 2006, the letter "T" in Tazo was changed a bit. This made it easier to read.
