The Story of Tazo Tea
How Tazo Started
Tazo Tea was created in 1994 by a person named Steven Smith. At first, another company called North American Tea & Coffee helped make and deliver the teas.
Joining Starbucks
In 1998, Tazo talked to Howard Schultz, who was the boss of Starbucks at the time. Tazo was looking for more people to invest in their company. Starbucks bought Tazo in 1999 for about $8.1 million.
Starbucks opened the first Tazo tea shop in November 2012. However, it closed just one year later. That shop then became a Teavana store.
New Owners for Tazo
In November 2017, Starbucks sold Tazo to a big company called Unilever for $384 million.
Later, in November 2021, Unilever decided to sell most of its tea business. This included Tazo. The sale was completed in July 2022. The new company that bought Tazo is now called Lipton Teas and Infusions.
Tazo uses a special style for its marketing and product labels. For example, every box of tea used to say it was "blessed by a certified tea shaman". One of their first slogans was "The Reincarnation of Tea." This means they wanted people to think of tea in a fresh, new way.
Until 2013, the Tazo logo used a specific font called Exocet. The company made small changes to the font over time. For instance, in 2006, they changed the letter "T" to make it easier to read.
