Tazos facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Tazos are small, round disks that were given away as free gifts with snacks like chips and crisps. Companies like Frito-Lay and its partners around the world used them to promote their products. The idea for Tazos was a bit like another game called Pogs. Each Tazo had a score, and players could play games to win Tazos from each other.

Tazos came in many shapes and sizes. At first, they were simple round disks. Later, they became octagonal (eight-sided) or even looked more like collectible cards. Some Tazo sets had small cuts around the edges. These cuts let players connect the Tazos together to build cool objects. For example, the Star Wars Tazos even had extra pieces to build spaceships!

Most Tazos are made from plastic. But some special sets were made from cardboard or even metal, like the Yu-Gi-Oh! Metallix series in Australia.

The Start of Tazos

Tazos first appeared in 1994. The very first sets had 100 disks with Looney Tunes characters. Another set had 124 Tiny Toons Tazos. These disks were found in snacks from a Mexican company called Sabritas. The name "Tazo" comes from a Spanish word, taconazo. This word means "to kick with the heel." It was a nod to a popular game in Mexico. In that game, kids would kick bottle caps to see who could send them the furthest.
