Te Rerenga is a cool place in New Zealand, located on the Whangapoua Harbour in the Coromandel Peninsula. A main road, State Highway 25, goes right through it. The town of Coromandel is about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) to the west, and Whitianga is to the southeast. Two rivers, the Waitekuri and Opitonui, flow from the Coromandel Range and empty into the Whangapoua Harbour.
Who Lives in Te Rerenga?
The area around Te Rerenga is called Mercury Bay North. It covers a large space of about 305 square kilometers (118 square miles). As of 2023, about 2,130 people live here.
In 2018, the population of Mercury Bay North was 1,611 people. This was a good increase of 294 people since 2013. There were 651 homes, with an equal number of males and females. The average age was 53.2 years old.
- About 14 out of every 100 people were under 15 years old.
- Around 11 out of every 100 people were between 15 and 29 years old.
- Almost half the people (46.6%) were between 30 and 64 years old.
- About 28 out of every 100 people were 65 or older.
Most people living here are of European descent (93.5%). There are also people from the Māori community (11.5%), and smaller groups of Pacific peoples, Asian, and other backgrounds. Some people identify with more than one group. About 17% of the people living in this area were born outside New Zealand.
When it comes to religion, most people (60.3%) said they didn't have a religion. About 27.4% were Christian. A small number of people followed Māori religious beliefs, Hindu, Muslim, or Buddhist faiths.
Learning at Te Rerenga School
Te Rerenga has its own school called Te Rerenga School. It's a school for all students from Year 1 to Year 8 (which is like elementary and middle school). As of February 2024. , it has 110 students. The school celebrated its 100th birthday in 2008, which is a really long time!
