Teays is a small, unincorporated community in Putnam County, West Virginia, United States. It was known as Seays until around 1884. The heart of the community used to be a general store and post office on Teays Lane. This building was right across from where the Teays railroad depot once stood. The old depot was taken down in the mid-1900s.
Teays is also part of a larger area called Teays Valley. This whole area was named after a hunter and trapper named Thomas Teays. He spent a lot of time exploring and living in this region long ago.
The Teays River Connection
Did you know that a very old, preglacial river was named after Teays? Geologist William G. Tight (1865–1910) gave the name Teays River to this ancient waterway. The community of Teays is located in what is now called the "riverless" Teays Valley. This valley was actually the bottom of that huge, ancient river. It's pretty cool to think that a river that disappeared thousands of years ago still has a connection to a place today!
