Teays Valley (pronounced TAYZ) is a special kind of community in Putnam County, West Virginia, United States. It's called a census-designated place, which means it's an area that looks like a town but isn't officially a city. In 2020, about 14,350 people lived here.
Teays Valley is located about 20 miles west of Charleston and 30 miles east of Huntington. It's part of the larger Huntington–Ashland metropolitan area. The community is split into two main parts: Teays and Scott. The area was named after Thomas Teays, a hunter and trapper who spent a lot of time there long ago.

The Ancient Teays River Valley
The "valley" in Teays Valley refers to what's left of a very old river called the pre-glacial Teays River. This river existed before the last Ice Age. A geologist named William G. Tight gave the river its name because Teays Valley was once the bottom of this huge ancient river.
Today, there isn't a big river flowing through the valley. Instead, water from the valley drains into smaller creeks. These creeks eventually flow into the Kanawha and Mud rivers.

The Putnam County Schools system runs the public schools in the Teays Valley area. Students here go to schools in two different areas:

- Winfield Area: Other students go to Winfield High School, Winfield Middle School, and Scott-Teays Elementary School.

Teays Valley Fire Department
The Teays Valley area is mainly protected by the Teays Valley Fire Department. This department started in 1964. Back then, it was run entirely by volunteers.
Since March 2013, the Teays Valley Fire Department has a mix of paid staff who work 24/7 and dedicated volunteers. This helps make sure the community is always safe.
