The Mud River is a river in southwestern West Virginia, in the United States. It's like a smaller stream that flows into a bigger river called the Guyandotte River.
From there, its water travels into the Ohio River and then all the way to the huge Mississippi River. This whole area where water collects and flows into one main river is called a watershed or drainage basin.
People often call it the Mud River because its water can look quite muddy. This river is also a favorite spot for people who like to fish for a large fish called a muskellunge.

Where Does the Mud River Flow?
The Mud River starts in Boone County, which is west of a town called Madison.
Its Journey Through West Virginia
The river flows mostly northwest for about 72 miles (116 kilometers). As it travels, it passes through Lincoln County and Cabell County.
Along its path, you'll find the towns of Hamlin and Milton.
Meeting the Guyandotte River
Finally, the Mud River joins the Guyandotte River near the town of Barboursville.
Ancient River Valleys
Close to where it meets the Guyandotte, the Mud River winds its way through a very old and large valley. This valley was once part of an even bigger, ancient river system called the Teays River.
