Ted Savage Jr. (born Ephesian Savage) was an American baseball player. He played as an Outfielder in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1962 to 1971. Ted played for many teams, including the Philadelphia Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals. He was born on February 21, 1937, and passed away on January 15, 2023.

Early Life and Talents

Ted Savage was born in Venice, Illinois, in 1937. He went to East St. Louis Lincoln High School in East St. Louis, Illinois. There, he was a star athlete in baseball, basketball, and football.

After high school, Ted attended Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri. He then served for three years in the U.S. Army.

Playing in the Major Leagues

Ted Savage started his professional baseball career in 1960. He signed with the Philadelphia Phillies as a free agent. In 1961, he played for the Buffalo Bisons in the International League. He had a great year, hitting for a .325 batting average, which was the best in the league. He also won the International League Most Valuable Player Award.

Making His MLB Debut

Ted made his first appearance in Major League Baseball on April 9, 1962. This was with the Philadelphia Phillies against the Cincinnati Reds. He came into the game as a pinch-hitter.

Later in that game, Ted got his first major league hit. It was a single that also brought in a run (an RBI). He even got another RBI single in the same game!

Moving Between Teams

After his time with the Phillies, Ted was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1962. He played 85 games for them, hitting five home runs.

Over his career, Ted played for several different teams. These included the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, and Los Angeles Dodgers. He also played for the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers.

His Best Season

Ted had one of his best seasons in 1970 while playing for the Milwaukee Brewers. He played in 114 games that year. He hit .279, which was a strong batting average. He also hit 12 home runs and had 50 RBIs.

Final Years in Baseball

In 1971, Ted was traded to the Kansas City Royals. His last game in the major leagues was on July 3, 1971. He got his final career hit in that game, a single off pitcher Tommy John.

Ted Savage finished his playing career with 642 games played. He had a career batting average of .233. He hit 34 home runs and had 163 RBIs in total.

Life After Baseball

After his baseball career, Ted Savage continued his education. He earned a PhD in urban studies from Saint Louis University.

He then became the athletic director at Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis for nine years. In 1987, the St. Louis Cardinals hired him. He worked as an assistant director for community relations and also helped coach minor league players.

Awards and Recognition

Ted was recognized for his achievements in baseball and his life.

  • In 2006, he was added to the Lincoln University Alumni Hall of Fame.
  • In 2016, the Buffalo Bisons inducted him into their team's hall of fame.

Ted Savage worked for the Cardinals for 25 years. He retired in 2012. A golf tournament that raised money for the Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) program was renamed the Ted Savage RBI Golf Classic in his honor.

Ted Savage passed away on January 15, 2023, at the age of 85.
