Teddy Pierre-Marie Riner is a famous French judoka. He was born on April 7, 1989. He is known as a heavyweight champion in the sport of judo. People sometimes call him "Teddy Bear" or "Big Ted" because of his size.

Teddy Riner has won many gold medals. He has won twelve gold medals at the World Judo Championships. This makes him the first and only judoka to achieve this. He also won three gold medals at the Summer Olympics in the +100 kg category (2012, 2016, and 2024). He won two more Olympic gold medals with the French mixed team (2020 and 2024). He also has two Olympic bronze medals (2008 and 2020).

From October 2010 to February 2020, Teddy Riner was undefeated. He won 154 matches in a row! This amazing winning streak ended in 2020 when he lost to Japanese judoka Kokoro Kageura.

Teddy Riner was born in Guadeloupe, a French island in the Caribbean. He grew up in Paris, France. When he was young, his parents signed him up for different sports. He played football, tennis, and basketball. But he liked judo the most. He said he preferred judo because it is an individual sport.

Teddy Riner is very tall, about 2.04 metres (6 ft 8 in) (6 feet 8 inches). He weighs about 141 kilograms (311 lb) (311 pounds). He has a partner named Luthna Plocus. They have a son born in 2014 and a daughter born in 2018.

Teddy Riner trained at the Levallois Sporting Club before joining Paris Saint-Germain in 2017. His coaches are Christian Chaumont and Benoît Campargue. He started winning big at a young age. In 2006, he won junior world and European titles.

Becoming a World Champion

In 2007, just after his 18th birthday, he won a gold medal at the 2007 European Judo Championships. Later that year, he became the youngest senior world champion ever. He won the heavyweight (+100 kg) event at the 2007 World Judo Championships in Brazil. He beat Kosei Inoue, an Olympic gold medalist, in the semi-final.

Olympic Medals and More World Titles

At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, Teddy Riner won a bronze medal. He then won his second World Championship gold medal in December 2008. This was at the Open weight Championships in France.

He continued his winning streak at the 2009 World Judo Championships in the Netherlands, earning his third world title. In 2010, he won another gold medal at the World Championships in Tokyo. He also won a silver medal in the open weight class that year.

Teddy Riner won his second European gold medal in 2011. At the 2011 World Judo Championships in Paris, he won the gold medal in the +100 kg division. This made him the first male judoka to win five world titles. He also won his sixth World Championship gold medal as part of the French team.

Olympic Gold and Unbeaten Streak

Teddy Riner won his first Olympic gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. He won the men's heavyweight event. He successfully defended this title at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

His incredible winning streak of 154 victories lasted almost 10 years. It ended in 2020 at the Paris Grand Slam. He lost in the third round to Kokoro Kageura.

In 2021, he won another gold medal at the 2021 Judo World Masters in Qatar.

Tokyo and Paris Olympic Success

At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Teddy Riner won a bronze medal in the over 100 kg class. He also won a gold medal as part of the French mixed team.

He competed in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. He was one of two people who lit the Olympic cauldron at the opening ceremony. He won the gold medal in the over 100 kg class, beating Kim Min-jong from South Korea. This made him one of only two judokas to win three individual Olympic gold medals in judo.

The next day, in the mixed team event, France faced Japan for the gold medal. Teddy Riner won his match against Tatsuru Saito. France won the tiebreaker, and Riner secured his fifth Olympic gold medal. France successfully defended their mixed team gold medal from Tokyo.

Awards and Recognitions

Teddy Riner has received many awards for his achievements:

  • 2011: RTL Champion of Champions (a French sports award)
  • 2012: L'Équipe Champion of Champions (France male category)
