First Mission of the Teeling Column
The Teeling Column's very first mission happened on December 30, 1956. Their goal was to attack a police station, known as a barracks, in Derrylin, County Fermanagh. This station belonged to the Royal Ulster Constabulary, which was the police force in Northern Ireland at the time.
What Happened at Derrylin
The main aim of the attack was to make the police officers inside the station surrender. However, the Teeling Column did not succeed in this. They became worried that more police officers, called reinforcements, would arrive and surround them. Because of this, the unit decided to leave the area. They crossed the border into County Cavan in the Republic of Ireland.
After the Mission
The very next day, the leader of the Teeling Column, Noel Kavanagh, was arrested. Six other members of the group were also arrested in County Cavan. This happened when officers from the Garda Síochána, the police force in the Republic of Ireland, found them. Eventually, all the members of the Teeling Column were put in prison.
Where Members Were Held
Ruairí Ó Brádaigh, who was second in command, was held in Mountjoy Prison for six months. The other members of the column were sent to Bridewell Prison.
