Teeling Distillery is a place in Dublin, Ireland, where they make Irish whiskey. It was started in 2015 by the Teeling Whiskey Company. This distillery is very special because it's the first new whiskey factory to open in Dublin in over 125 years!
Dublin used to be a huge center for making whiskey. Many years ago, there were at least 37 distilleries there. The last of the old Dublin distilleries closed in 1976. So, Teeling Distillery is the first whiskey factory to operate in Dublin in almost 40 years.
The distillery was founded by two brothers, Jack and Stephen Teeling. Their father, John Teeling, had started another famous distillery called Cooley Distillery in 1987. The Teeling Distillery is located in an old part of Dublin called the Liberties. This area is close to where an ancestor of the family, Walter Teeling, had his own distillery way back in 1782. The symbol for the Teeling brand is a phoenix, a mythical bird, rising from a pot still. This shows how the Teeling whiskey name is being reborn.

The Teeling Family's Whiskey History
Early Family Whiskey Making
Back in 1782, Walter Teeling opened a whiskey distillery on Marrowbone Lane in Dublin. This area, the Liberties, was known as the "golden triangle" because so many distilleries were there. Some of these old distilleries were very big. For example, George Roe's Thomas Street Distillery was probably the largest distillery in the world at one point.
Eventually, a larger nearby distillery bought Walter Teeling's factory. This was William Jameson & Co.. However, William Jameson's distillery closed in 1923. Many Irish distilleries faced tough times and closed in the early 1900s.
A New Start in the 20th Century
In 1987, John Teeling, who was a descendant of Walter Teeling, bought a factory in Cooley, County Louth. This factory used to make industrial alcohol from potatoes. John Teeling changed it into a whiskey distillery. He reopened it in 1989 as Cooley Distillery. This was the first new distillery to open in Ireland after many others had closed down.
Teeling Distillery Today
John Teeling's two sons, Jack and Stephen, worked with their father at Cooley Distillery. In 2011, Cooley Distillery was sold to a company called Beam Inc. (now Beam Suntory). Jack, who was in charge at the time, left the company. His brother Stephen stayed for about a year.
When the distillery was sold, the Teeling family made a deal. They were able to buy 16,000 barrels of aged whiskey. Jack Teeling used these whiskey stocks to start his own company, Teeling Whiskey, in 2012. His brother Stephen later joined him in this new adventure.
In 2015, the Teeling brothers opened their new whiskey distillery. It is located in Newmarket Square in Dublin. This is not far from where the first Teeling Distillery was on Marrowbone Lane.
The Teeling Distillery has a special visitor center. It also has a café and a shop. About 55 people work there now. The distillery sells its whiskey to 44 different countries around the world.
Teeling Whiskey Types
All Teeling whiskeys have 46% ABV. This means they have 46% alcohol. They are also "non-chill filtered." This is a way of making whiskey that keeps more of its natural flavors. Here are some of the types of whiskey Teeling makes:
- Teeling Small Batch: This whiskey is finished in barrels that used to hold Rum.
- Teeling Single Grain: This whiskey is aged in barrels that once held Californian cabernet sauvignon wine.
- Teeling Single Malt: This is a mix of whiskeys that were finished in five different types of wine barrels. These include Sherry, Port, Madeira, White Burgundy, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
- Teeling Single Pot Still: This whiskey is made from a mix of malted and unmalted barley. It is aged for three years in barrels that used to hold Muscat wine.
- Teeling The Revival 13-year-old: This whiskey is aged for 12 years in Bourbon barrels. Then, it spends 1 year in a barrel that held Calvados, an apple brandy.
- Teeling Vintage Reserve 24-year-old Single Malt
- Teeling Vintage Reserve 33-year-old Single Malt
Teeling also makes a traditional Irish clear spirit called Poitín.
- Teeling Spirit of Dublin Poitín: This spirit has between 50% and 52.5% alcohol.
Awards and Recognition
Teeling whiskeys have already won many awards! At the 2016 World Whiskies Awards, they received honors such as:
