History of Tell, Texas
Tell was founded in 1887. It was first called Tell-Tale Flat. In 1888, Belle Garrison opened the first post office. She ran it from her dugout home. The name was shortened to Tell in 1905 by postal officials.
Early Businesses and Growth
By 1906, Tell had several businesses. Jim Fox owned a grocery and drugstore. R. A. Hawkins built the first cotton gin. Richard A. Sandifer ran a general store. By 1916, the community had four churches and many other businesses. The Tell State Bank operated from 1916 to 1934. It then joined with the Childress State Bank.
Population Changes Over Time
Over the years, Tell lost many of its businesses. This happened as transportation improved. By 1984, Tell had two churches, a store, and a cotton gin. The population was 59 that year. It grew to 63 people in 1990. However, the population then decreased. It was 15 in 2000, 32 in 2010, and 20 in 2019.

Geography of Tell
Tell is located in the southwestern part of Childress County. It sits where Farm to Market Road 2042 and Farm to Market Road 94 meet. It is about 12 miles (19 km) southwest of Childress. Tell is also about 13 miles (21 km) south of Estelline.
Education in Tell
The first school in Tell was south of the current community. Janie Roberts was the teacher. In 1912, the school moved to its present spot. It became famous for its baseball team. The team won many championships. In 1963, the school joined the Childress Independent School District. The old school building then became a community center.
Famous Person from Tell
Walt Faulkner was born in Tell. He lived there for his first two and a half years. In 1950, he made history. He was the first rookie to win the pole position for the Indianapolis 500 race.
