Telopea Park is one of the oldest and most interesting parks in Canberra, Australia. It's a great place to visit, whether you want to play, have a picnic, or just relax. The park has a unique shape and a cool history!

What's in a Name?

Telopea Park gets its name from Walter Burley Griffin, who designed the city of Canberra. He had a special plan for how the city's streets and parks would be named.

Griffin's Grand Plan

Walter Burley Griffin imagined that the main streets leading into Canberra, which were named after Australian states, would end at a park. Each park would be named after a native plant from that state. For example, Telopea Park is at the end of Sydney Avenue.

The Waratah Flower

The park is named after the Telopea flower, which is also known as the Waratah. This beautiful red flower is the official floral emblem of New South Wales. So, the park's name connects it to the state of New South Wales, just as Griffin planned!

Park Features

Telopea Park was created in 1922. It's a long, thin park with lots of different trees, both native Australian ones and others brought from around the world.

Fun for Everyone

The park is a popular spot for families and friends. It has special areas where you can have a barbecue and playground equipment for kids to enjoy.

Water and Bridges

Running right through the middle of the park is a stormwater drain. Don't worry, it's not just a ditch! Several small bridges cross over it, making it easy to get from one side of the park to the other.

Heritage Listed

Because of its history and importance, the ACT Heritage Council officially listed Telopea Park in 2012. This means it's a special place that needs to be protected and looked after for future generations.

Where is Telopea Park?

Telopea Park is located between the suburbs of Barton and Kingston. It's also very close to the famous Lake Burley Griffin.

Park Boundaries

The park has streets on either side called Telopea Park West and Telopea Park East. At its southern end, you'll find Manuka Oval, a well-known sports ground. At the northern end, near Lake Burley Griffin, is Bowen Drive.
