Temascaltepec de González is a town and the main city of the Temascaltepec area. It is located in the southern part of the State of Mexico in Mexico. The town is about 66 kilometers (41 miles) southeast of Toluca and 140 kilometers (87 miles) from Mexico City.

The name "Temascaltepec" comes from the Náhuatl language. "Temazcalli" means "steam bath," and "tepetl" means "hill." So, it means "hill of the steam bath." The Matlatzinca people, who lived there long ago, called the area "Cocalostoc," which means 'cave of crows'.

History of Temascaltepec

The first people to live in the Temascaltepec area were the Matlatzincas. They likely founded the village where the modern town stands today.

When the Spanish arrived and took over Mexico, the area was given to Andrés de Tapia in 1556. The first church in Temascaltepec was built in 1559.

The town grew a lot after silver was discovered nearby in 1545. Temascaltepec became a very important place for mining valuable minerals, including silver, during the time Mexico was a Spanish colony. This continued until after the Mexican War of Independence.

In 1858, the government of the state officially made Temascaltepec a town. Then, in 1861, it was named Temascaltepec de González. This was to honor Plutarco González, an important leader during a time of big changes in Mexico called La Reforma. Even with the longer name, most people still just call it Temascaltepec. In 2005, the town had 2,253 people living there.
