Station History
Early Discoveries
In 1862, people found a special rock called kerosene shale in the area. This rock could be used to make oil. However, the land around the Liverpool Range was very hilly. This made it hard to move the shale. In 1871, a mine for this shale started at Mount Temi.
Opening and Purpose
Temple Court station opened in April 1878. Its main job was to help the shale mine. It gave workers and the mine a nearby train service. For many years, not much happened with the shale. But after 1905, the mine started to grow.
Connecting to the Mine
In 1910, a special side track was built. It was located north of Temple Court. A short train line was also built. This line went from Temple Court to the shale oil processing plants. These plants were run by the British Australian Oil Company. They operated from late 1911 to early 1915.
While the plants were working, the train line carried crude shale oil. This oil was sent to a refinery in Hamilton. The short train line was removed in 1931. You can still see parts of the old train route today. One part is a curved mound of earth near the Pages River. Another part of the old route is now Elizabeth Street in Murrurundi.
Station Closure
Temple Court station stopped offering passenger services. This happened on February 20, 1975. After it closed, the station building was taken down. Now, nothing remains at the site where the station once stood.
