Ten Talents is a special cookbook first made in 1968 by Rosalie and Frank Hurd. It focuses on vegetarian and vegan recipes. At the time, it was one of the first books to help people cook plant-based meals. The book shares ideas about healthy eating based on the Bible, following beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. By 1991, over 250,000 copies of the book had been sold. A bigger version with more than 1,000 recipes came out in 2012.

What Does the Title Ten Talents Mean?

The name of the book, Ten Talents, comes from a quote by Ellen G. White. She was a founder of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. She said that knowing how to cook food well is very important. She compared this skill to having "ten talents," which is a reference to a story in the Bible called the Parable of the Talents. This means cooking healthy food is a valuable skill.

What's Inside the Book?

The first edition of Ten Talents from 1968 had 750 recipes. All these recipes were plant-based, meaning they used ingredients like fruits, vegetables, and grains. The book also included recipes for babies.

Besides recipes, it had helpful sections like:

  • Lists of natural ingredients
  • Tables to help you measure things
  • Information about nutrition
  • Ideas for natural remedies
  • A guide to the Seventh-day Adventist way of healthy eating, which is called Christian vegetarianism.

The book teaches about eating healthy food based on the Bible. The covers of the different versions of the book often show author Rosalie Hurd reading a Bible.

Special Recipes and Ingredients

Many recipes in Ten Talents use soybean products. These include soy pulp, soy milk powder, and soy flour. The book was one of the first to share recipes for soy milk ice cream shakes. It also had an early recipe for soy sour cream.

Most recipes are completely plant-based. However, one chapter has recipes with milk and eggs. This chapter was for people who were just starting to eat more plant-based meals.

The book also featured some of the first recipes for granola and cashew milk. It used ingredients like nutritional yeast and soy sauce to add flavor to dishes. Many recipes were for loaves, fritters, and patties.

How the Book Was Published

Ten Talents was first published by its authors in May 1968. It was updated in 1985 and published by College Press. By 1991, it had been printed 44 times and sold over 250,000 copies. A larger version with more than 1,000 recipes came out in 2012. The book has always been made with a spiral binding. This makes it easy to lay flat while you are cooking.

The Ten Talents cookbook won a Silver Medal in the Cooking/Natural category. This award was given at the 2009 Living Now Book Awards.
